Exercise Guide for Low Back Pain

Overview

Low back pain will affect everyone at some point in their lives. Most of us will recover with few residual symptoms, while others will develop chronic or recurrent pain.

The treatment of low back is complicated, varying with the underlying cause of pain, the duration and severity of symptoms and the activity and function of the patient.

There are a number of exercise regimes for the treatment and prevention of back pain. These therapies are targetted at preventing pain through:

  • Increasing your awareness of your spine, including when it is properly aligned and when irritation may be occurring.
  • improving posture to balance the mucles acting around the spine and align joints.
  • Stretching, strengthening and balancing the muscles that support your spine, from the legs to the pelvis and abdomen all the way up to the shoudlers.
  • Increasing and maintaining aerobic fitness and activity

This guide aims to give a simple overview of different methods of treating back pain. No guide can however replace talking to a professional about your pain.
